Brief description

This dataset contains information on known flying-fox roost locations across New South Wales, and supersedes the previous [Grey-headed Flying-fox Camps dataset](https://datasets.seed.nsw.gov.au/dataset/grey-headed-flying-fox-camps64935).
There are three species of flying-fox that occur in NSW, the grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus), black flying-fox (P. alecto), and little red flying-fox (P. scapulatus). The grey-headed flying-fox is listed as a threatened species under NSW legislation (Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016), and is the primary focus for the NSW DCCEEW’s management of flying-foxes.
The data represents all locations known to the NSW DCCEEW that have been used by flying-foxes since 1990. A ‘roost’ is defined here as any location where 10 or more flying-foxes have been observed roosting during the day, for five or more consecutive days. These criteria have been developed so that instances where flying-foxes roosting alone or in small temporary groups are not classified as a flying-fox roost. Point location data is intended to be indicative of the location of such roosts and is not exact, noting that flying-fox roosts will expand and contract their colony footprint over time based on occupancy, which point data is unable to reflect.
Roost locations are derived from multiple sources, including historic grey-headed flying-fox surveys conducted between 1998 and 2004; roosts recognised under the National Flying-fox Monitoring Program; and records of flying-fox occurrences held by NSW DCCEEW and informed by regional stakeholders.
The dataset provides data on roost location, and year of roost formation or year it was first recorded if the year of roost formation is not known. Temporal occupancy and abundance estimates are not included. Data is categorised according to [Local Government Area (LGA)](https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/public/find-my-council/local-government-area-boundaries-and-mapping-information/) and [NSW government planning regions (DCCEEW BCS Region)](https://datasets.seed.nsw.gov.au/dataset/planning-regional-growth-boundaries). Additional information on flying-fox species that have been recorded at each site has been included where data is available, noting that a value of ‘0’ does not mean the species has never occurred at this site, only that there are no records that specify presence of this species. For a detailed overview of the fields and their sources, refer to the attachment ‘Field Descriptions’ in the data downloads.
The NSW Flying-fox roost location dataset is a csv file which contains GPS co-ordinates represented in decimal degrees. The spreadsheet has been converted to a point locality GIS layer via these coordinates but then reprojected to GDA94.
