The Northern Hospital first opened in February 1998, and Northern Health was established in July 2000. The Hospital was created as a result of the desegregation of the North Western Health Care Network. These changes were made in order to improve the quality of services and to provide community focused health care.

The Northern Hospital, located in Epping, is a major community hospital. As at December 2017 the Hospital has five campuses including Broadmeadows Health Service, Bundoora Extended Care Centre, Craigieburn Health Service, Panch Health Service and The Northern Hospital.
