The Newtown Volunteer Fire Company was formed on 18 March 1875. In 1884 the station was registered under the Fire Brigades Act Schedule A as a metropolitan fire brigade. (1) The Company’s Fire Station was at the Railway Brigade in King Street, Newtown. (2) In July 1890 the Government made available the old watch house as a temporary Fire Station but later that was sold by the Board. (3) In 1891 the Government purchased a site in Australia Street and erected a station. The volunteer company ended in June 1892 when the new premises opened with a staff of partially paid firemen. (4) The Fire Brigades Act, 1909, Schedule one part one listed the Newtown Fire Station as one of the City of Sydney and suburban municipalities fire stations. (5) In 1913 a fire station was erected at Newtown by the Board of Fire Commissioners. (6) In 2000 the address of the Station was 214 Australia Street, Newtown.
