Brief description

This Review of Environmental Factors (REF) has been prepared as a supplementary environmental assessment to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prepared in 1990 for the proposed construction of a bridge and approaches at the Woronora River, Woronora. The REF relates to the design elements, environmental factors and likely impacts that have changed since the proposal was approved. Consent was given for the project in 1993 and construction commenced in 1994. Footings for bridge piers 3-6 were completed in 1995. The proposal was then deferred for several years. In November-December 1997 bushfires destroyed several residences in the Menai area, bringing to attention the urgent requirement to complete the upgrading of the road and to provide a more effective access across the Woronora Valley for Emergency Service vehicles. On 5 December 1997 the Minister for Roads announced that work would recommence and that the project would be completed. Since approval was given for the proposed project in 1993, some environmental standards and legislation have changed and additional design features have been included in the project. It is important to both update the EIS in terms of these changes and to review any potential additional environmental impacts.
