Notes

Parts of this collection are digitised and available on the ANMM web site www.anmm.gov.au

Significance

The greater part of the collection contains household items such as bowls, walking sticks, desk sets and ashtrays made from parts of Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships when scrapped; this includes HMA Ships SYDNEY (I), AUSTRALIA (I), and ENCOUNTER. War service medals from all conflicts in which the RAN has served feature in the collection as well as medals and medallions presented by various state or local governments. Souvenirs from serving men and women include ship pennants, paintings and carvings of their ship made by local craftspeople, sweetheart badges and brooches, crossing the line certificates and Christmas cards, and programs and booklets. Wartime appeal badges, medallions from Royal Visits, commemorative coins, and Doulton ceramics make up some of the more unusual material.
