National Centre for Indigenous Genomics

Brief description

The National Centre for Indigenous Genomics (NCIG) is located in the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University in Canberra. The Centre was officially launched in 2014 to manage a national collection of Indigenous biospecimens and their associated data and documents. NCIG aims to establish a national resource for appropriate and respectful genetic and genomic research that will benefit Indigenous Australians. The Centre is overseen by an Indigenous-led Governance board and will develop innovative methods of dynamic consent, and provide a model for world’s best practice for collection, use and storage of biospecimens from Indigenous communities. The collection can be used by bona fide researchers for projects that aim to provide broad benefit to: the people and communities providing the biospecimens or their descendants; the broader Indigenous community; and the general Australian community.
