Myamyn State School (School No. 1692)

Myamyn State School (School No. 1692) (VA 5403) was a co-educational primary school in the town of Myamyn, in the Glenelg region of south-west Victoria. It first opened on 13th March 1876 under the Head Teacher George McHardy. It operated until its closure in 1951 as part of the government's consolidation policy for rural schools which saw the closure and consolidation of a number of primary schools in the region.

Parents petitioned the Education Department (VA 714) from 1875 for a school to service the local children, and a formal application was accordingly raised that same year. It was estimated that there would be an estimated average of 25 children to attend, more than were able to attend the closest school, Condah State School (School No. 1019) (VA 5446), at that time. Tenders for the erection of a school building and master’s residence were received in February 1879 and were subsequently built.

In 1891, the school building and master’s residence were burnt down in an accidental fire, completely destroying everything on the site. New buildings were provisioned in 1892 but were not deemed sufficient for the number of students attending. A new wooden building was eventually erected for the school in 1909. Despite this, it seems as though there were issues with the school building for a number of years and in 1924 it was reported that the school was being conducted in the local hall until the building could be removed from its present isolated position to a site closer to the township. 

Discussions about merging state schools in the area began from 1944, when it was represented by parents to the Minister of Public Instruction that students would benefit from communal facilities such as libraries, art rooms, cafeterias, and sports facilities, that would otherwise not be available at small, often single-teacher, rural schools. This discussion included existing schools at Heywood, Heathmere, Myamyn, Drumborg and Homerton.

In 1951, the official process of consolidation began, with schools progressively closing and students moving to the Heywood State School (School No. 297) site to join the newly established Heywood Consolidated School (School No. 5226) (VA 5369). As well as Myamyn, these schools included Condah State School (School No. 1019), Drumborg State School (School No. 1240), Hotspur State School (School No. 1260) (VA 5440) and Mount Eckersley State School (School No. 1720) (VA 5402). 

Myamyn State School was officially closed on 18th May 1951 and the Myamyn school building was moved to Heywood to form part of the new school site.
