Some extralimital specimens are also held for research, comparison, quarantine and other purposes. Currently, the MAGNT houses 195 holotypes and over 1300 paratypes of insects. To date, approximately 11,000 specimens in the collection have been databased. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) Entomology Collection was established in 1981 and continues to the present.
