Full description

The Municipality of Broughton’s Vale was originally part of the Gerringong Ward of the Municipality of Kiama. (1) The Municipalities Act of 1867 provided for the separation of a municipality on the receipt of a petition signed by at leased two-thirds of the electors resident or owning rateable property in any defined area of any municipality. (2) A petition by more than two-thirds of the ratepayers of the Gerringong Ward was presented to the Governor. The petition proposed the separation of the Gerringong Ward from the Municipality of Kiama and for the Ward to be divided into two separate and distinct municipalities - the Municipalities of Broughton’s Vale and Gerringong. (3)

On 24 April 1871 the Municipality of Broughton’s Vale was proclaimed and the first election of aldermen and auditors occurred on 19 June 1871. (4) Those elected aldermen were: Thomas Clarke, William Boyd, William Henry Morrow, Alexander Freeborn, John Davey, and Adam Boyd - who was also elected Mayor. The two auditors were Hugh Boyd and Alexander Hanlon. (5)

On 1 July 1948, the Municipality of Broughton’s Vale merged with the Municipalities of Berry, Nowra, Ulladulla, South Shoalhaven, and the shires of Cambewarra and Clyde to form the Shoalhaven Shire Council. (6)
