Brief description
Presented are long time-series temperature products and climatologies compiled from data obtained at 4 multi-decadal monitoring sites around Australia. These include the 3 long-term National Reference Stations at Port Hacking (~ 151.2E, 34.1S), Maria Island (MAI, ~ 148.2E, 42.6S), and Rottnest Island (ROT, ~ 115.4E, 32S) in ~100 m, 90m and 55m of water respectively and a fourth long-term site off Port Hacking in 50 m. At all four locations sub-surface ocean temperature has been recorded nominally weekly to monthly since the 1940s or 50s from in situ bottle data. In recent years, the historic records have been augmented with data obtained from additional observational platforms including moored sensors, vertical profiles and satellite-derived data. The temperature data have been quality controlled and combined using a rigorously tested methodology. We have packaged the multi-decadal, multi-depth, multi-platform temperature time-series at each site and produced a range of daily temperature climatologies from different data combinations and time periods. The 17 data products are provided as CF-compliant NetCDF files. The data collection is supported by Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System and data are open-access. This dataset is superseded by a newer version - https://catalogue-imos.aodn.org.au/geonetwork/srv/api/records/225e0493-f8e5-40f5-b25e-c24f8796795eLineage

CreditWe acknowledge the foresight of CSIRO Marine Research for instigating the data collection in the 1940s and its continuation in recent decades through IMOS.
We are indebted to everyone involved in the data collection, including: the Australian National Mooring Network and National Reference Station field teams, and former CSIRO technical staff for the on-going mooring deployments, boat-based hydrographic sampling and data processing since the 1940s.
Data was sourced from Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) - IMOS is enabled by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
We acknowledge NSW state government co-investment in the sampling from 1997-present.
