3) regulation of mining operations with a particular focus on safety and environmental management, and
4) encouraging investment in mineral exploration in New South Wales.(3)

In late 2004, Mineral Resources relocated to Maitland in the Hunter Valley and the Mine Safety Technology Centre was relocated from Lidcombe to Thornton, near Maitland.

From 1 July 2009 when the Department of Primary Industries was abolished the Mineral Resources Division combined with the Energy component of the former Department of Water and Energy to become the Minerals and Energy Division within the new Principal Department, the Department of Industry and Investment.
