Full description

The datasets include polar metabolite and lipid profiles from juveniles aged 6 and 15 weeks, as well as 12, 15 and 27-30 months, supporting biochemical profiling from early post-settlement stages through to advanced herbivorous juvenile development.

The collection supports investigation of age-related changes in juvenile physiology, biochemical pathways, sensory-associated molecules, lipid metabolism and the onset of toxicity-related processes, including saponin production. These data provide a resource for understanding crown-of-thorns starfish development and may support future applications in ecological monitoring, outbreak prediction and management of this coral predator.
Lineage: The datasets in this collection were generated from juvenile crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster sp.) sampled across defined ontogenetic stages, including 6 and 15 weeks, as well as 12-, 15- and 27–30-month-old juveniles, with additional younger stages incorporated as data become available. Samples were processed for untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics to characterise age-related biochemical variation across polar metabolites and lipid classes.

Raw analytical data were acquired using mass spectrometry-based workflows and processed through standard metabolomics and lipidomics data reduction pipelines, including peak detection, alignment, feature filtering, annotation and statistical comparison among age groups. Processed datasets were curated to support interpretation of biochemical pathways associated with juvenile development, including energy metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, lipid remodelling, sensory-associated molecules and the onset of toxicity-related processes such as saponin production.

Derived data products include feature tables, annotated metabolite and lipid outputs, and associated sample metadata.
