Full description

Opportunistic collection of acoustic data from 28kHz fisheries sounders using Echolistener digitisers from the Megisti Star at the peak of spawning period at St Helens Hill and St Patricks Head to provide extra information over that key time period. A continuation of the 1999 acoustic survey of St Helens Hill where Southern Surveyor and the industry vessel Saxon Progress participated in acoustic surveying of orange roughy stocks (see Marlin record number 5545).

Statement: Echolistener digitising units are used to connect across the already installed fisheries echosounders providing a relatively low cost way of obtaining digitised acoustic data. The quality of the data is determined partly by the characterisitcs of the system that is being digitised. Conventional fisheries sounder have wide beam transducers which have undefined beam patterns and are at present uncalibrated. An objective of this project is to assess the usefulness of such data and determine if it can provide data to the required accuracy
