The Merit Protection Boards were established in 1994 under the Teaching Service Act 1981 for the purpose of hearing grievances and appeals from members of the Teaching Service regarding transfers, promotions, personal issues, discipline, sexual harassment and discrimination. The Boards must also advise the Minister about issues relating to merit and equity in the teaching service. The Merit Protection Boards run programs of training in the principles of merit and equity for principal class officers, teachers, school services officers and public servants.The Merit Protection Boards are a statutory body within the Department of Education and report to the Minister for Skills, Education Services and Employment.
