The Town and Country Planning Board was constituted under the Town and Country Planning Act 1944. An amending Act in 1949, the Town and Country Planning (Metropolitan Area) Act authorised the M.M.B.W. (VA 1007) to prepare a comprehensive plan for Melbourne and the Metropolitan area. A subsequent Act in 1954 established the Board as the permanent planning authority for Melbourne and the metropolitan area.
The MMBW was given responsibility for statutory planning of an enlarged metropolitan area following planning legislation approved in 1968. Note the Melbourne Metropolitan Interim Development Order Extension Area No.1 coming into operation on 1 December 1971 and the Amending Planning Scheme No.3.
This series holds the written documentation for planning controls for the period 1954 to 1988.
Under the Town and Country Planning (Metropolitan Area) Act 1954 the MMBW was made responsible for the making of an Interim Development Order (IDO) for the metropolitan area, establishing planning controls in the metropolitan area until the gazettal of the Melbourne Metropolitan Planning Scheme.
