Meatian West Primary School (School No. 3464; previously known as Meatian State School 1904 – 1930; Meatian West State School 1930 – c.1970)

Meatian West Primary School (School No. 3464) (VA 807) first opened in February 1904 as Meatian State School. The co-educaitonal primary school was located approximately 10km south of Ultima in the Rural City of Swan Hill, Victoria, the school initially operated from a leased building purchased by local residents from the former Kaneira School (School No. 3246) and erected on the school site in 1903.

At its opening, Meatian State School operated part-time with Ultima State School (School No. 3426), sharing a single teacher who divided their time between both sites. Average attendance was around 13 students at the time. Further information on when Meatian State School was made full time is subject to further research.

The building was extended in 1907 to almost double its original size, but by 1920 it had fallen into disrepair despite ongoing maintenance efforts. In January 1925, a permanent wooden school building was opened west of Meatian in the Parish of Murningin, and the school was relocated and the lease on the earlier site was terminated. A shelter pavilion was added in 1927.

In July 1930, the school was renamed Meatian West State School to reduce confusion with Meatian Railway Station School (School No. 3761) (VA 819) and to reflect its location west of the railway station and township.

In 1970, there was a statewide decision to broaden the use of the term ‘State School’ to include all government schools, rather than referring exclusively to primary-level schools. Subsequently, all primary schools began to use ‘Primary School’ in the name. Accordingly, the school name was changed to Meatian Primary School around this time.

Meatian West Primary School likely ceased operation around 1974, with the site possibly remaining as a “ghost school” (destaffed but not formally closed) until it was permanently closed in March 1976.  The site was sold by public auction in September 1983.
