Mary Allport (1806-1895) was one of Australia's earliest woman artists and her collection of around 200 watercolours, drawings and etchings are unique early examples of colonial painting. Mary Allport (1806-1895) was one of Australia's earliest woman artists and her collection of around 200 watercolours, drawings and etchings are unique early examples of colonial painting. She was the first colonial woman lithographer, etcher and engraver, and this collection is mainly a result of the 1965 bequest by her great-grandson, Henry Allport, to the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts. In addition to a number of fine watercolour portraits Mary painted works on natural science subjects relating to Australian native flowers, trees and ferns. Her Book of treasures 1829-1880 is an album containing pencil, pen and ink and watercolours drawings etchings and photographs created by herself and her family and covers England and Tasmania. Many of her watercolour portraits are done on ivory and while mainly of her family there are pictures of other colonial identities, including one of the artist John Glover don in 1832. Her sketchbooks cover a number of interesting subjects including: a dairy at Bagdad, Tasmania; an orchard at Aldridge; graves of the officers of ""L'Astrolabe"" and ""La Zelee""; hop picking in New Norfolk; the Mount Nelson semaphore and castle ruins and picturesque views from English locations.Significance
