"Marnie" Bassett, daughter of Sir David Orme Masson was born in Melbourne and educated privately. She married Walter Bassett in 1923 and published a number of works on Australasian exploration and colonial history including "The Governor's Lady" (1940); and "The Hentys" (1954). Her sister Elsie was also a writer and married the anthropologist Bronio Malinowski. Lady Barrett was awarded the Litt.D. (Hon.) by Monash University in 1968 and by the University of Melbourne in 1974. She died at ninety in 1980.
