Brief description

This dataset provides details of over 1700 marine algal samples collected throughout the world between 1964 and 2010. The algal samples are kept in laboratory cultures at the University of Melbourne. The dataset includes the species name, date and location of collection, and the status of the culture.

A Small Australian Research Council (ARC) Grant was awarded in 1995 which has helped to develop and maintain the cultures
Purpose
The collection was established to assess the genetic diversity of species common to the mangroves and related habitats. The culture has also provided resources for molecular studies on how asexual populations of red algal species develop from sexual populations world wide, as well as studies on cell motility in red algae.
