Brief description

Major and trace element data of basalt samples from the Macquarie Ridge Complex (MRC). The MRC samples include basalts collected from Macquarie Island, the only exposed portion of the submarine Macquarie Ridge, by R. Merle and K. Evans during a field trip in November 2017, and dredge samples collected by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand, during the TAN0803 voyage in 2008. Analytical methods of the major and trace elements: The samples were analysed at Genalysis Laboratory Services, Perth. Ten Macquarie Island samples and 6 MRC seamount samples were first crushed and pulverized using a low-chrome steel mill. Powders were fused with lithium borate and analysed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Powders for trace element analysis were fused with lithium borate and analysed via Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP–OES). For the elements Co, Cu, Li, Ni, Pb, Tl and Zn, a four-acid digestion was used; solutions were analysed by ICP–Mass Spectrometry (ICP–MS).
