Brief description

Flying bird breeding colonies on Macquarie Island.
This is a polygon dataset stored in the Geographical Information System (GIS).
Attributes include the species name and the time of the year during which breeding occurs.
The species include Black-browed Albatross, Grey-headed albatross, Southern Giant-Petrel and Wandering Albatross.

Lineage

Progress Code: completed
Statement: The locations of most of the breeding colonies were eyed in using as a guide sketches by Aleks Terauds of the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlfe Service. The sketches were done on three A4 maps which together covered the island at a scale of 1:50000.
Aleks did not mark all Southern Giant-Petrel colonies on the maps. This is because they vary in size and location from year to year. He drew on the maps those colonies that are most consistently present or large in size. Aleks did not include the Northern Giant-Petrel colonies or Light-mantled Sooty Albatross colonies in the data. He stated that the Northern Giant-Petrels nest right around the coast of Macquarie Island on the coastal flats and the Light-mantled Sooty Albatross also have a ubiquitous distribution, nesting mainly on the coastal slopes around the island.
The locations of some additional Southern Giant-Petrel breeding colonies were eyed in using information provided by Robb Clifton (Station Leader 2001) as a guide. These observations were made by Aleks Terauds, Mark Geyle, Kieran Lawton (FTO) and Martin Schulz.
The data conforms to the Australian Antarctic Spatial Data Model which includes Data Quality Indicators.

Usually mapped to a Universal Transverse Mercator projection, Zone 57.
