John Lovering was educated at the University of Sydney and the Californian Institute of Technology. He was a Research Fellow and Senior Fellow in the Department of Geophysics at the University of Sydney before taking up the Chair of Geology at the University of Melbourne in 1969. In 1985 he became Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne. From 1987-1995 he was the Vice-Chancellor of Flinders University in South Australia. He was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia in 1993.Data time period: 1930
