Full description
The Long Gully Primary School (School No. 2120) was first opened in the Bendigo region by the Minister of Public Instruction on the 15th January 1879, as Long Gully State School. The school was built on the site of the Long Gully Common School (No. 372) that closed in 1867 and was later demolished to make way for the new school. The common school had been bought by the state from the Church of England, who opened the school in January 1856.
Between 1926 and 1928, Long Gully State School was closed and the site was used by the Education Department to house the Bendigo Teachers College. The school resumed again at the site in 1928.
In 1970, there was a statewide decision to change the use of the term ‘State School’ to refer to all primary, secondary and technical schools instead of just primary schools, and for all primary schools to use ‘Primary School’ in the name. Accordingly, the school name was changed to Long Gully Primary School.
Although the school was eventually closed in 1992, the red brick school building built in 1878 still stands and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
