Brief description Climate change threatens estuarine shorelines and surrounding ecosystems, settlements and infrastructure. Attempts to assess estuary vulnerability have been hampered by diverse geomorphology, and the complex response of shorelines to climate drivers such as sea-level rise and rainfall. Estuaries sequester large amounts of sediment and carbon. The relationship between rates of sediment supply and sea-level rise is fundamental to understanding the carbon sequestration potential of estuaries and geomorphic response of estuaries to climate change. This project aims to quantify sedimentation and carbon flux within selected estuaries in southeastern Australia and will have direct implications for climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation.
