Brief description We will identify the role of water-level manipulation in structuring key ecosystem processes across a range of shallow lakes to determine which conditions foster resilience. We will provide an explicit and generalisable framework to enable authorities for the first time to predict how a shallow lake will respond to changes in water level. This will be an important advance in ongoing challenges Australia faces in minimising threats to biodiversity, developing lake-specific operating rules to preserve environmental values, and providing a basis for adapting lake management to climate change. This will provide a scientific basis for moving from reactive to proactive management, by targeting leading rather than lagging environmental variables.
