Brief description The project's ultimate aim is to increase the efficiency of ironmaking on the basis of further understanding of coke degradation in the blast furnace which will lead to a scientific approach to selection of coals and coke manufacturing with the addition of non-coking coal and biomass. The project will study changes in the coke macro and micro-mechanical strength, porosity, microtexture and microstructure in processes of coke heating to high temperatures, up to 2000 oC, and reaction with realistic blast furnace gases. Optimisation of the coal mix for cokemaking will result in process, economic and environmental benefits to ironmaking and improve the competitiveness of Australian steelmaking industry.
