Brief description This project will use sequence the genomes of ancient wheat, barley and rye grains recovered from storage jars buried in a Neolithic cave in Armenia. We will examine the genetic diversity at a range of loci associated with stress tolerance to factors such as aridity, salt, and disease, and identify alleles that have been lost from modern crops as they were selected for yield and harvest ability. We will use ionomics to analyse the interaction between environmental change (increasing aridity over time) and genetic diversity at these loci. We will also functionally characterize new alleles at key loci using protein expression systems to explore their potential utility for modern crop breeding.
