Brief description This innovative project will develop highly efficient, biocompatible and clinically-compliant ‘radio magnetic’ nanoparticles suitable for simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These nanoparticles will be used to study dendritic cell migration. We will call these materials ‘radio magnetic’, because they will harbour radioactive and superparamagnetic functionalities in a single nanoparticle imaging probe, which will enable bimodal imaging. Incorporating two complementary but diverse imaging capabilities in a single nanoparticle imaging probe will overcome existing PET imaging limitations, such as poor spatial and anatomical resolution, and MRI limitations, such as MRI’s low sensitivity.
