Brief description Upland swamps and chains-of-ponds are key regulators of water supply and quality in catchments of eastern Australia. These systems are under serious threat from coal seam gas exploration, longwall mining, urbanisation and climate change. The aim of this project is to understand and quantify the physical structure and ecological function of upland swamps and chains-of-ponds so that conservation and rehabilitation measures for these endangered ecosystems can be more effectively designed and implemented. Protection and rehabilitation of these systems as part of Catchment Action Plans and National Water Initiatives requires cross-disciplinary science at its foundation. This project will deliver such knowledge.
