The Lexton Waterworks Trust was constituted in 1965 under the Water Act 1958. Its function was to construct, manage and maintain the works for the supply of water to the Township of Lexton.

The Trust was reconstituted in 1984 as the Lexton Water Board under the provisions of the Water and Sewerage Authorities (Restructuring) Act 1983. By 1993 the Lexton Water Board became part of the Ballarat Water Board under an Order of the Water Act 1989. From 1995 water and sewerage for this region has been under the control of the Central Highlands Region Water Authority.
