Full description
This series consists of lease documents prepared under Sections of the Land Acts of 1862, Amending Land Act 1865 and Sections of the Land Act 1869. These are on parchment and give the terms and details of the lease including the date and the authority. Other details are those of the lessee, the location and a full surveyor's description of the land and a scale plan of the land. For land leased under the 1862 and 1865 Acts this will include the name of the proclaimed Agricultural Area. Many include the seal indicating that they were executed leases. A number of leases include on the outside an indication of the Section of the Act under which they were prepared. It is not known with certainty the reason for these, apart from the small number of unexecuted leases, being returned to the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538). The most likely explanation is that they were returned at the time all payment requirements had been met and a Crown grant was to be prepared with a Certificate of Title by lease being exchanged for the freehold certificate of title. Other explanations are that they may have been returned when an existing lease was being converted to a new one under an Act subsequent to that under which the original was granted or as part of the process of transferring the lease from one lessee to another.
The P1 consignment was previously registered as Units 1 - 5 of VPRS 850/P Applications for Crown Grants, Section 22 Land Act 1862
