Fire scars are automatically detected and mapped using dense time series of Landsat imagery acquired over the period 2008 - present. The method has been found to map over 80% of fire scars captured in Landsat imagery with less than 30% false fire rate. The accuracy of 2013 fire scar mapping has been further improved by manual removal of false fires and addition of missed fires. The 2013 fire scars product is strongly affected by SLC-Off striping in Landsat-7 imagery. This results in data loss in the imagery, and fragmentation in the fire scar maps. It also impacts on the performance of the fire scar algorithm, reducing detection rates and increasing the number of false fires.
