Brief description

These datasets are Land Resource Area mapping available in Queensland. A Land Resource Area is a group of related soils developed on a common geology and in most cases has a similar vegetation community. Refer to individual records for more information.

Land resource areas - Atherton/ Mareeba Land Management Manual, North Queensland - ATA - This dataset is a Land Resource Area map of the Atherton-Mareeba region in the Wet Tropics. The mapping covers parts of the Atherton, Cooktown and Mossman 1: 250,000 scale map sheets and was completed in 1989. The mapping is at a scale of 1: 500,000 and 7 Land Resource Areas were identified with 15 associated Soil Profile Classes.

The mapping covers parts of the Chinchilla, Mundubbera, Roma and Taroom 1: 250,000 scale map sheets (SG56-9, SG56-5, SG55-12, SG55-8) and was completed in 1985. The mapping is at a scale of 1: 250,000 and 16 Land Resource Areas were identified. The project was undertaken at the request of the Taroom Shire Council, which had no single report or map describing the land resources of the whole shire at a suitable scale for Shire planning. Previous land resource surveys had covered major or minor sections of the shire boundary.

The survey was undertaken as part of a land degradation assessment and includes 200,000 ha of the most highly productive alluvial plains.

The mapping covers parts of the Dalby, Goondoowindi and St George 1: 250,000 scale map sheets (SG56-13, SH56-1, SH55-4) and was completed in 1990. The mapping is at a scale of 1: 250,000 and 15 Land Resource Areas were identified with 31 associated Soil Profile Classes. The project identifies and describes areas with similar land resources areas as well as the soils that equate to agricultural management units that occur. It also collates available land suitability information on the soils together with current management recommendations.

The Land Management Manual which accompanies this data is a collection of currently available land resource data, combined with local knowledge and experience, primarily concerning soils and their management. The manual discusses the attributes and limitations of the soils used for primary production for some 1.57 million hectares in the study area.
