Full description

Laguna Public School in the County of Northumberland opened in February 1873.(1) The school was reduced to a Half-Time School sharing a teacher with Wattagon Half-Time School between October 1910 and July 1926. In July 1926, Laguna was converted to a Provisional School and remained in this status until December 1938. Between January 1939 and October 1941, Laguna once again became a Public School. Between October 1941 and November 1957, Laguna returned to being a Provisional School. From November 1957, Laguna again returned to being a Public School and has remained in this status.(2) In 2003, Laguna Public School was located on Old Sydney Road, Laguna in the District of Maitland.(3) When the first Laguna Public School was opened a minimum attendance of twenty five children was required for a school of this status until 1880 when the number was reduced to twenty. From 1957, the minimum number was reduced to nine.(4) Half-Time Schools were elementary schools which catered for children in areas of scattered population. A teacher visited two or more schools. When the Laguna Half-Time School commenced there was no minimum attendance requirement for schools of this status. Provisional Schools could be established in areas where insufficient children attended to justify the establishment of a public school. The parents provided the premises which the Department of Education supplied a teacher and the teaching materials. When the first provisional school was established at Laguna a minimum of ten pupils was required for a school of this kind. This number was reduced to nine in 1945, Provisional Schools ceased in 1957 when the remaining schools with nine or more students (including Laguna) were converted into public schools. REFERENCE
