This project studies the fundamentals of how ice flows. The project is carried out primarily in the Hobart laboratories, and involves experiments in which ice samples from Antarctica are loaded under various stresses at different temperatures. The ice samples are selected with a range of crystal sizes, crystal orientations, impurity content, etc. so that the effect of each of these properties on the flow of the ice can be measured. The ice flow within the Antarctic Ice Sheet is governed largely by the deformation of the ice near the base. It is thus essential to understand the flow processes in the basal ice to accurately model the Antarctic Ice Sheet mass balance. Therefore, over the next 3 years, this project will carry out measurements at warm temperatures, of the flow rates of silty ice similar to that found at the base of the ice sheet. Records for this work have been archived at the Australian Antarctic Division. Logbook(s): Glaciology Ice Compression and Ice Crystal Log Book, GAO - Notes of various experiments and results carried out on ice compression in the field. Brief description

Metadata record for data from ASAC Project 8 See the link below for public details on this project. This project studies the fundamentals of how ice flows.
