In 1854, it was established that there would be a hospital built in Kilmore to be named Kilmore Hospital. By 1858 the local community had raised £1269 with the Government granting an additional £500 to fund the project.
Kilmore Hospital opened in 1860 and treated 86 patients in its first year. In 1864 the hospital was incorporated under the provisions of the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act 1864.
The hospital was expanded in 1975 with the construction of a 20-bed ward. The hospital was further extended when a new services wing and clinical support facilities were established on 29 July 1984.
In 1985 the local community and the hospital established a committee to examine the possibility of establishing a nursing home on the hospital grounds. The Kilmore Nursing Home Society was registered as a benevolent society under the provisions of the Hospitals and Charities Act 1958 in 1988. In principle approval was received to build the nursing home later that year. The nursing home Caladenia Nursing Home opened in 1991.
On 23 November 1988, The Kilmore Hospital changed its name to The Kilmore & District Hospital to reflect the growing area that it served.
In 1994 the Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health granted an in principle approval for an Aged Care Hostel to be built as part of the hospital. Dianella Village Hostel opened in 1997.
A major redevelopment of the hospital was completed 26 June 1995 which included renovations of the existing operating theatre, general administration, provision of new birthing suites, wards, new accident and emergency area and 10 additional acute patient beds, increasing the total number of beds to 30.
Governance arrangements for the hospital and nursing home were brought under the hospital board of management in 2002.
There were various improvements to the hospital during the 2000s including the building of a dedicated reception for the hospital’s diagnostic imaging service, the capacity for a CT scanner and ultrasound services, renovation of the theatre suite and upgrading of the general reception facilities.
In 2015, a redevelopment project was completed, which saw the building of a dedicated outpatient facility, second surgical suite, day-stay recovery area and an additional 30 acute patient beds. The project allowed for conversion of the existing consulting rooms into student accommodation and additional car parking.
Late 2020 saw another name change to the Kilmore District Health. This change was to reflect the broader range of the health services provided to the community.
