Geoscience Australia carried out marine surveys in Jervis Bay (NSW) in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (GA303, GA305, GA309, GA312) to map seabed bathymetry and characterise benthic environments through co-located sampling of surface sediments (for textural and biogeochemical analysis) and infauna, observation of benthic habitats using underwater towed video and stills photography, and measurement of ocean tides and wave-generated currents. Data and samples were acquired using the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) Research Vessel Kimbla. Bathymetric mapping, sampling and tide/wave measurement were concentrated in a 3x5 km survey grid (named Darling Road Grid, DRG) within the southern part of the Jervis Bay, incorporating the bay entrance. Additional sampling and stills photography plus bathymetric mapping along transits was undertaken at representative habitat types outside the DRG. Sample/species matrix of infaunal taxa derived from Van Veen grab samples taken on the HMS Kimbla surveys GA0312 and GA0315 in Jervis Bay. This dataset is a contribution to the CERF Marine Biodiversity Hub.Lineage

Statement: Sediment samples were taken from the HMS Kimbla using a Van Veen grab. Returned sediments were washed on a half millimetre sieve. Retained material was preserved in ethanol. Preserved material was sorted under a dissecting microscope and the animals were identified and enumerated. Log of edits carried out on Jervis Bay infaunal data (winter) 1) Data was recorded using the beta test version of Biotally while processing the samples. No data sheets were generated. Daily backups were made to an external hard drive and stored separate to the laptop housing the software. 2) With help from Lauren Hughes and Jim Lowry, the following amendments were made to amphipod names: What was became Gammaridea_sp5 Gamaropsis_sp2 Gammaridea_sp44 Podoceros_sp1 Eusiridae_sp1 Amaryllis_kamata Gammaridea_sp6 Isopoda_w_mask Gammaridea_sp46 Iphimedia_ambigua Dexaminidae_sp2 Halice_sp1 Gammaridea_sp8 Ceradocus_serratus Corophiidae_sp1 Rhinocetes_robustus Lysianassidae_sp2 Parawaldeckia_cf_yamba Corophiidae_sp2 Cerapus_quarta Gammaridea_sp9 Colomastix_sp1 Gammaridea_sp33 Unciolidae_sp1 Melitidae_sp1 Photis_sp1 Ampeliscidae_sp1 Ampelisca_sp1 Lysianassidae_sp1 Pachynus_denticulatum Gammaridea_sp42 Ericthonius_forbesii Gammaridea_sp43 Hippomedon_rodericki Gammaridea_sp47 Pardaliscidae_sp2 Gammaridea_sp1 Gammaropsis_sp3 Gammaridea_sp2 Pardaliscidae_spX Leucothoidae_sp2 Aora_mortoni Gammaridea_sp50 Icillius_australis 3) Data exported from Biotally and opened in PRIMER 4) PRIMER data check function run to look for: missing values; duplicate samples; all zero samples; estimated values; negative values; duplicate variables; all zero variables. 5) Processed missing samples between Feb 1st and 12th.
