Bennett, A 2014, Inverto, a series of 24 photographs, https://inverto.me Research background Inverto sought to extend & refine photographic representation of gender transition by establishing a consistent visual style in a studio environment. The project was constructed as a visual conceptual strategy with the subject photographed in the same pose with the same lighting at monthly intervals over a period of two years. Research contribution Inverto compresses the subtle and gradual process of physically aligning gender identity with embodied presence into a powerful photographic statement that demonstrates the impact of hormones & surgery on physical gender presentation. The project was driven by a desire to offer insight into an experience that very few get to observe. The subject's medical team was not aware of another case in which a transman had chosen to delay transition in order to have a baby. Research significance Inverto was part of Forever Now, launched at MONA FOMA 2015. It was shown as a solo exhibition at Testing Grounds as part of Midsumma Festival; FILE Electronic Language International Festival, Brazil; Gendered Perspectives at Harman Centre Gallery, Bradley University, Chicago; Homeostatis Lab as part of The Wrong; New Digital Art Biennale; muliebrity & other collaborations at Kingston Arts Centre; Fed TV as part of Blindside Play; & shortlisted for the Incinerator Art Award 2018. Inverto #19 won the Centre for Contemporary Photography Salon portraiture award & included in The Guardian 'Best Australian Photographs of 2015'. ABC TV Australian Story produced a 30 minute documentary "From Daddy's Tummy" on the story behind Inverto, screened 10 August 2015. The project went viral with articles appearing in several languages, including interviews in The New York Times, ABC News & Buzzfeed. Inverto was accepted as a peer reviewed creative contribution to Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media, and Technology, No.7.Issued: 2015
