The inaugural meeting of the Charles Sturt University (CSU) Interim Academic Senate was convened on 12 December 1989. (1) The establishment of the Interim Academic Senate was approved in principle by the Interim Board of Governors resolution BG 89/23. (2)
The membership of the Interim Academic Senate was comprised of the following:
- the Vice-Chancellor (or until that position was filled, the Acting Vice-Chancellor);
- each of the Chief Executive Officers of the Members of the University, that is, Mitchell (Bathurst campus), Murray (Albury campus) and Riverina (Wagga Wagga campus);
- six persons nominated by the University of New South Wales, the sponsoring University;
- one undergraduate student representative, and one postgraduate student representative;
- the Presiding Member of the Academic Committees of each of the respective Members of the University, presently Mitchell, Murray and Riverina;
- two persons elected by and from each of the Academic Committees of CSU-Mitchell and CSU-Riverina, together with one person elected by and from the Academic Committee of CSU-Murray. (3)
The terms of reference approved for the Interim Academic Senate were:
- to be the principal academic body of the University;
- to advise the Board of Governors and the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to teaching, scholarship and research within the University;
- to be responsible for monitoring the academic policies of the University;
- to advise the Vice-Chancellor on the teaching and research profiles for the University and on the spread of the profile across the Members;
- to consider and report on all matters referred to it by the Board of Governors or by the Vice-Chancellor;
- to have such other powers, duties and functions as may be determined by the Board of Governors from time to time. (4)
The Sub-Committees of the Interim Academic Senate that were established included the Interim Higher Degrees Committee, the Mitchell Interim Academic Committee, Murray Interim Academic Committee and the Riverina Interim Academic Committee. (5)
The final meeting of the Interim Academic Senate took place on 26 February 1991, after which time it was succeeded by the substantiative Academic Senate. (6)
