Full description
BACKGROUND: The project extends research into modified topology optimisation, robotic 3D printing formwork and high-performance concrete. It is part of a body of research that employs structural generative design process and robotic 3D printing fabrication. Intelligent Form is no longer stranded by complex design methods, eventually balancing optimal mechanics performance and architectural aesthetics. It has been fabricated as a prototype of a 2.9m high symmetrical intricate wall through a 3D printing mould and spraying concrete. These technologies have the potential to be widely applied to mass customisation and manufacturing in the building industry.CONTRIBUTION Intelligent Form is a pioneering project in the integration of a new topology optimisation method, 3D printed inexpensive material for formwork and cheap high-performance concrete. The project demonstrates the potential of new design and construction strategies for low-cost buildings. It contributes to the building industry through using material-efficient design and inexpensive materials in construction. This research further enables the creation of innovative, efficient, and organic architectural forms needed to facilitate the realization of mass customization in the construction industry.
