Full description

The aim of INSTANT (International Nusantara Stratification and Transport program) was to directly measure the flow of warm and fresh waters from the western equatorial Pacific into the South Indian Ocean via the Indonesian passages.
The INSTANT project began in 2003 and was a 3-year deployment of mooring arrays and coastal pressure gauges that obtained in-situ velocity, temperature and salinity data from the sea-floor to the surface in the major inflow and outflow straits that make up the Indonesian choke point. The mooring array was designed to measure the mass, heat and freshwater transports that flow into and out of the Indonesian Seas. A total of 11 deep-ocean moorings were deployed within the major Indonesian inflow passages of Makassar Strait and Lifamatola Passage and the exit passages of Lombok Strait, Ombai Strait, and Timor Passage (See figure1.gif in 'Supporting Documentation').
Users of data in this collection should reference the collection DOI and Sprintall, J., S. E. Wijffels, R. Molcard, and I. Jaya (2009), Direct estimates of the Indonesian Throughflow entering the Indian Ocean: 2004–2006, J. Geophys. Res., 114, C07001, doi:10.1029/2008JC005257.
Lineage: The INSTANT dataset consists of ADCP, CTD and thermistor instrument data with QC applied, derived transport calculations and some gridded data (time and pressure gridded). Raw data was collected from multiple instruments, uploaded and QC applied. Some QC was completed by CSIRO/Scripps (Timor, Ombai and Lombok data) and some by LDEO (Makassar Strait and Lifamatola).
The user is referred to the documentation included in the 'Links' section to obtain the full details on the method of creating these files.
The QC documentation for the Timor, Ombai and Lombok data and products is included with the data files.
