Registration of stillbirths did not come into operation in Victoria until circa 1953 and has its authority under the Registration of Birth, Deaths and Marriages Act 1952 (No.5623). Prior to this date, in accordance with the provisions of the Cemeteries Act of the (Commonwealth) Social Services Consolidation Act 1947, cases were notified to Registrars.The provisions of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages require the registration of stillbirths. The particulars required for registration were completed (Second Schedule) and forwarded to the Government Statist.
This series comprises name index books created to provide access to stillbirth registrations by surname of parents from circa 1953 to 1984. From 1971, the series was also used to index neonatal deaths. Index entries for stillbirths were made in blue ink and for neonatal deaths under the name of the child in red ink. Neonatal deaths were registered in VPRS 8340 Death Register.
