Brief description

This layer group describes multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2015_V01 titled "IMOS Southern Ocean time series automated moorings for climate and carbon cycle studies southwest of Tasmania". The voyage took place between March 21 and March 30, 2015, departing from Hobart (TAS) and arriving in Hobart (TAS)

The primary objective was to deploy 3 moorings and retrieve 1, as well as other sampling. Multibeam data was required to assist in verifying deployment sites. Bathymetry data from this site, had previously been collected on Southern Surveyor using the EM300. The EM122 provided much improved data coverage of the area, and extra mapping was undertaken at night where possible. As mooring work was undertaken during the day most multibeam data acquisition was monitored.

This dataset is published with the permission of CSIRO. Not to be used for navigational purposes.

The dataset contains bathymetry grids of 10m to 210m resolution of the Southern Ocean, produced from the processed EM122 and EM710 bathymetry data.

Lineage

Data processing for the EM122 and EM710 data was performed using CARIS 8.1.8. Data from both systems were imported into a single CARIS project using different vessel files, Investigator_EM122 and Investigator_EM710. A zero tide file was applied to the data before merging. All lines were swath edited and then gridded at 100 m using Swath Angle determination. Areas were then further edited using subset editor.

The data was then gridded at multiple resolutions in python Caris batch script using a Depth filter Vs Resolution guideline derived from AusSeabed Multibeam guidelines v2 and further inspected for outliers. Final raster products are available in L3 folder of this collection. Final processed data were also exported per line as GSF and ASCII format and available in the L2 folder of this collection.
