This information sheds light on larval distribution and spawning for fisheries management needs. This dataset includes larval fish abundances collected from 12 voyages around Australia since 1983, as well as more recent data from the Marine National Facility (MNF). The backbone of the dataset is from five Integrated Marine Observing Systems (IMOS) National Reference Stations (NRS) (North Stradbroke, Port Hacking, Maria Island, Kangaroo Island and Rottnest Island), between 2014 and 2021 as part of the IMOS Larval Fish Monitoring Sub-Facility of the National Mooring Network Facility (data currently available up to 2021). This adds information to the biological, ecological and oceanic measurements already sampled at these long-term monitoring sites. For information on using the data from the NRS stations and research voyages, please refer to Smith et al., 2018. It is advised that anyone using this data should read this methodology or contact the project contact person to understand the nuances of each sampling and analysis chain. The fish larvae product is available as raw count product, where fish larvae are classified to the lowest taxonomic level possible (with 228 taxonomic groups identified so far, at either the Family, Genus, or Species level). Associated metadata includes location, temperature, salinity, net type, and tow volume. There is a static snapshot of the database as at March 2018 (https://dx.doi.org/10.4225/69/5ab33c62f9c52), and this has been documented in a Scientific Data publication (Smith et al., 2018). This metadata record provides access to the dynamic (most recent) version of the database, which can serve as a data repository for survey of larval fish assemblages in the region.Maintenance and Update Frequency: asNeededStatement: Ichthyoplankton samples are collected off small vessels at the IMOS National Reference Stations. Tows are generally 12 minutes in length, taken at depths of ~25m (although depth may vary between samples). The sampling methods are fully described in the IMOS NRS Biogeochemical Operations Manual (Davies & Sommerville, 2017). The analysis and quality control (QC) procedures, performed at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) and the Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI), are described in Smith et al., 2018. Data sampling is being conducted as part of a larger IMOS monitoring program. All larval fish are extracted from ichthyoplankton samples under a microscope at SIMS and then transported to the Australian Museum. The sampling methods employed for voyage-derived larval fish data varies widely, with a variety of nets and mesh sizes used (see Hinchliffe et al., 2021 for a summary). Each MNF voyage has a unique number (beginning with FR, SS or IN), and each voyage summary can be found on the MARLIN data trawler. Larval fish are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible by Tony Miskiewicz, who is a taxonomic expert in larval fish identification, using the Neira et al. (1998) guide to larval fish The abundance of each taxa found in the ichthyoplankton samples, alongside associated tow metadata, are then exported to IMOS. All larval fish from the IMOS National Reference Stations are archived in the Australian Museum's collection. Most of the historical samples are also archived at Australian Museum or CSIRO fish collection.Statement: For data from NRS stations ATTRIBUTE STATEMENT: Project - Name of the project the sample was collected for StationName - Name of the station where sample was collected StationCode - IMOS site code for station Latitude - Nominal latitude (North) of the station where sample was collected (Decimal degrees, WSG84 datum) Longitude - Nominal longitude (East) of the station where sample was collected (Decimal degrees, WSG84 datum) TripCode - Unique code for the sampling trip SampleTime_UTC - UTC date and time of sample collection SampleTime_local - Local date and time of sample collection Year_local - Year of sample collection Month_local - Month of sample collection Day_local - Day of month of sample collection (local time) Time_local24hr - Local 24hr time of sample collection SampleDepth_m - Depth of sample collection, or “integrated”, or “water column” CTDSST_degC - Temperature of the water column at 10m depth, from matching CTD cast CTDChlaSurf_mgm3 - Artificial chlorophyll concentration at 10m depth, computed from bio-optical sensor on matching CTD cast CTDSalinity_psu - Derived salinity of the water column at 10m depth, from matching CTD cast [taxonomic level name] (e.g., “Noctiluca scintillans”) - Taxonomic level abundance count Temperature_degC - Underway measured temperature or CTD measurement for NRS stations Salinity_psu - Underway measured salinity or CTD measurements for NRS stations Volume_m3 - Volume of water collected to sample larval fishes Vessel - Name of the vessel that performed the larval fish sampling TowType - Type of fishing net technique used to collect larval fish samples GearMesh_um - Mesh size of the fishing net used to collect larval fish samples Bathymetry_m - Sea floor depth in the larval fish sampling location QC_flag - Quality control for larval fish sampling&rft.creator=Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) &rft.creator=Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) &rft.creator=CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere - Hobart &rft.creator=Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI) &rft.creator=Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) &rft.creator=Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) &rft.date=2021&rft.coverage=114,-35.00000000000001 114,-34 113,-34 113,-32 110.99999999999999,-32 110.99999999999999,-31 112.00000000000001,-31 112.00000000000001,-30.000000000000007 113,-30.000000000000007 113,-28 112.00000000000001,-28 112.00000000000001,-26 110.99999999999999,-26 110.99999999999999,-25 112.00000000000001,-25 112.00000000000001,-24 113,-24 113,-23.000000000000014 112.00000000000001,-23.000000000000014 112.00000000000001,-22 113,-22 113,-21.000000000000014 114,-21.000000000000014 114,-25 113,-25 113,-26 114,-26 114,-29 115,-29 115,-31 116,-31 116,-33 115,-33 115,-35.00000000000001 114,-35.00000000000001&rft.coverage=113,-32 114,-32 114,-31 113,-31 113,-32&rft.coverage=140,-39 140,-37 141,-37 141,-37.99999999999999 142,-37.99999999999999 142,-39 140,-39&rft.coverage=146,-42.999999999999986 147,-42.999999999999986 147,-42.00000000000001 148,-42.00000000000001 148,-40 149,-40 149,-44 145,-44 145,-42.999999999999986 146,-42.999999999999986&rft.coverage=143,-40 143,-37.99999999999999 146,-37.99999999999999 146,-40 145,-40 145,-39 144,-39 144,-40 143,-40&rft.coverage=147,-39 147,-37.99999999999999 148,-37.99999999999999 148,-37 150,-37 150,-39 147,-39&rft.coverage=136,-35.999999999999986 136,-35.00000000000001 137,-35.00000000000001 137,-35.999999999999986 136,-35.999999999999986&rft.coverage=150,-35.999999999999986 150,-35.00000000000001 151,-35.00000000000001 151,-33 152,-33 152,-31 153,-31 153,-27 155,-27 155,-30.000000000000007 154,-30.000000000000007 154,-34 153,-34 153,-35.00000000000001 152,-35.00000000000001 152,-35.999999999999986 150,-35.999999999999986&rft.coverage=110.99999999999999,-24 110.99999999999999,-23.000000000000014 112.00000000000001,-23.000000000000014 112.00000000000001,-24 110.99999999999999,-24&rft_rights=Data, products and services from IMOS are provided as is without any warranty as to fitness for a particular purpose.&rft_rights=&rft_rights= http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/&rft_rights=https://licensebuttons.net/l/by/4.0/88x31.png&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Graphic&rft_rights=Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License&rft_rights=http://creativecommons.org/international/&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Text&rft_rights=The citation in a list of references is: Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS);
