The use of a network of acoustic receivers provides a powerful tool for observing animal movements in Australian coastal and continental shelf ecosystems. An array or network consists of a series of acoustic receivers that are strategically deployed on the sea floor for 1 to 10 years (depending on receiver type and battery life) with the ability to download data from the receivers as often as required. Acoustic Telemetry makes it possible for animals to be monitored over scales of hundreds of metres to thousands of kilometres, informing habitat use, home range size, effectiveness of marine protected areas, refinement of stock assessment and migratory patterns. The Animal Tracking Facility and the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) have worked together to create a readily accessible Database. The data search page displays all existing and historical acoustic receiver locations that have contributed to the national telemetry network maintained by the Animal Tracking Facility and collaborators. Only the most recent receiver deployment for each acoustic receiver station is displayed in this dataset collection on the AODN Portal. In this dataset collection, active deployments consist of all deployments deployed and not recovered within a 24 months timeframe. Brief description

The Acoustic Telemetry Sub-Facility of the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility (formerly known as the Australian Animal Tracking And Monitoring System (AATAMS)) supports a large network of strategically located acoustic receivers in waters around Australia to detect and track tagged animals. Unrecovered receiver deployments older than 24 months are considered as inactive deployments. The data page is hosted by the AODN and is updated by the Animal Tracking Facility team.
