Full description

Ice sheet surface elevation data from an oversnow ground-based traverse to Knuckey Peaks (67.90 S, 53.53 E) from GE2 (68.65 S, 61.97 E) near Mawson Station (67.60 S, 62.88 E) during the 1975/76 summer season.

The printouts from the doppler positioning used to precisely fix the position of the observation points are archived at the Australian Antarctic Division.

A PDF copy of the log book from the traverse is available for download from the provided URL.

Statement: The data record is essentially complete along approximately 360 km of traverse route. Barometric pressure was manually recorded at 1.6 km (1 mile) intervals along the traverse track. Ice sheet surface elevations were controlled by satellite Doppler positioning at 50 km intervals along track. The data have been checked for consistency with general agreement from ANARE aerial survey work in the area (1976/77 and 1979/80). Horizontal distances were calculated by odometer wheel placement of route marker canes every 1.6 km (1 mile), constrained by Satellite Doppler positioning at major waypoints (50 km spacing). Along track accuracy was estimated at 100-300 m, across track accuracy had estimated errors up to 1000 m.
