NEW

We have released a new GDA2020 version of our Foundational Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) datasets which replaces the current GDA94 version. This updated service aligns our spatial data with the national standard, improving accuracy, consistency, and compatibility with modern positioning technologies.

The previous service will remain available during the transition period as GDA94 services are retired, but users are encouraged to move to the new GDA2020 service as soon as practical.

DescriptionNSW Hydro Line defines the centreline of a water course. It includes features such as natural water course, canal-drain, race, spill way and tunnel-siphen. It includes key attributes such as hydro line name, perennially and flow direction.

Features within the Hydro Line class include:

Watercourse
  • Natural Watercourse - A naturally formed watercourse. This line feature dataset is part of the Topographic database.
  • Canal-Drain - An artificial (built) watercourse to convey water and/or to allow transportation upon. This line feature dataset is part of the Topographic database.
Watercourse Centre Line
  • Spillway - A constructed path or channel for excess water to pass over or beside a dam. This line feature dataset is part of the Topographic database.
  • Tunnel-Siphen - An underground watercourse conveying water that has direct association with the hydrographic network. Also included are siphens which is a man-made or natural conduit in the form of an inverted U shape and filled until gravitational force or atmospheric pressure is sufficient to force water in one end of the pipe and out the other end thus conducting water beneath a depressed place.
Connector

Connector - A line used maintain continuity of a watercourse where that watercourse is not physically evident. This line feature dataset is part of the digital Topographic database.

Water security is one of Australia’s major challenges. Key users of the hydrology data are NSW State and Local Government agencies as well as Federal Government agencies. These bodies use this data to better manage State and Local Government assets.

This hydrology data provides the NSW component of the Australian Hydrological Geospatial Fabric which is a critical input to the Australian Water Resources Information System.

More widespread use of the hydrology data is also found in emergency management response and recovery efforts, hazard mitigation or disaster risk reduction, climate change, natural resource assessment, environmental planning and monitoring, insurance, mining and agriculture.
