Brief description
This data was collected to quantify the recreational use of the Bunurong Marine Park. Observations were made on 139 days at 11 locations within the Park from 8th January 1990 to the 22nd April 1991. At each location the number of people and the activity of each person on the reef were recorded. The time of the observation as well as the temperature, wind direction, wind speed and general weather conditions were also recorded.Lineage

Statement: Surveys were done using binoculars, to assist in identifying activities, and took between two and ten minutes per location. Activity categories were walking, collecting, overturning boulders, fishing, snorkelling and diving or 'other', which included activities such as sitting, sun-baking and swimming in rock-pools. Days were chosen haphazardly but all had low tides less than 0.70 m above MLLW, with a tidal range of about 2.1 m. To determine whether the number of people varied with day-type, the days were grouped according to whether they fell during school holidays (including Easter) or term times and whether they were weekdays or on weekends. Weekends included any public holidays whether or not those holidays fell on actual weekends.
Data parameters: Activity (walking, collecting, overturning boulders, fishing, snorkelling, diving, other), temperature, wind direction, wind speed.
