Hugh Maguire was born on 24 April 1905 at Sydney, New South Wales, the son of Denis Maguire and his wife Annie nee Dolan. He was educated at Sydney High School and at the University of Sydney (LLB 1st Class Honours 1930). In 1927 he shared the Pitt Cobbett Prize for Constitutional Law with R O McGeachan and was runner up to McGeachan for the Wigram Allen Scholarship No.1 for general proficiency in the subjects of Section 1 of the Intermediate LLB examination. (1)On 25 February 1924 Maguire joined the New South Wales public service as a junior clerk in the District Courts office of the Department of the Attorney General and Justice, later rising to clerk. He was admitted to the New South Wales Bar on 19 February 1931 but did not begin his practice until 1933, after he left the public service. He practised in all jurisdictions, especially Common Law. Maguire was a member of the Council of the New South Wales Bar Association from 1945/46 to 1946/47 and again in 1952/53. He was made a King's Counsel in 1951. (2)
Maguire was an Acting Judge of the District Court and Acting Chairman of Quarter Sessions for some months in 1947. On 30 March 1953 he was made an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales for six months. On 25 September 1953 he was appointed a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. He retired from the Supreme Court on 31 October 1973. (3)
Maguire died at Sydney on 3 May 1976. On 31 December 1936 he had married Dorothy Mary O'Brien and they had one son and three daughters. (4)
