The prison also provides catering services for all of the state's male prisoners. As of 2025, its operational capacity is 305.

Originally named Her Majesty's Melbourne Remand Centre, MAP was established in 1989 as a maximum-security remand prison. It was officially opened on 6 April 1989 by the then Premier of Victoria and received its first prisoners on 29 May 1989.

In 1996, the prison was renamed Her Majesty's Melbourne Assessment Prison and replaced HM Metropolitan Reception Prison (VA 4107) as the state's central facility for prisoner assessment.
